Litchfield County Courthouse

History on the Green - Litchfield Connecticut

Standing prominently along the Green, the Litchfield County Courthouse reflects both the legal history and architectural character of Litchfield. Constructed in 1889, the courthouse was originally designed in the Romanesque Revival style and substantially remodeled in 1913–14 to give it a more Colonial appearance in keeping with the historic character of the town. Its stone façade, white trim and distinctive clock tower make it one of the most recognizable buildings in the center of Litchfield—a fitting companion in this collection to the little Tapping Reeve Law School where formal legal education in America took root more than a century earlier.
