Finding inspiration in the glimpses we remember
I have always loved art, but I didn't pick up oil paints until 2016. What began
as a new creative challenge quickly became something much more. I found
myself absorbed in the entire process—from discovering a subject that makes
me stop and take notice, through the many layers of painting and detail, until
I finally reach that point when the painting feels complete.
My inspiration is often found in the familiar: a historic New England building,
an old stone wall, a weathered barn, flowers gathered with treasured country
objects, animals with unmistakable personalities, or a beautiful view discovered along a trail. Other paintings reach further into my own family's past and my Swedish heritage. I have even returned to century-old family photographs, using paint to bring color and life back to moments experienced by generations before me.
Over time, I realized there is a common thread running through much of my work. I am drawn to places, objects and moments worth remembering.
That connection became especially meaningful to me as I began exhibiting my work. People would stop in front of a painting and tell me their own story. A familiar landmark reminded someone of the town where they grew up. An old crock or Mason jar brought back memories of a grandparent's home. A Maine landscape recalled summers spent along the coast. Sometimes the connection is completely different from the one that inspired me to paint the subject—and I love that.
Those conversations are one of my favorite parts of sharing my art. Once a painting leaves my easel, its story no longer belongs only to me. The person viewing it brings their own memories and experiences to it.
I am a self-taught oil painter, and after a decade of painting I still find there is always something new to learn. Now that I am retired, I finally have more time to follow those moments of inspiration, continue developing as an artist, and create the glimpses that catch my attention.
NLV Creative Glimpses grew from that idea. My paintings are glimpses of places I've visited, history I want to preserve, objects that carry character, family stories, and ordinary moments that deserve a second look.
If one of my paintings makes you stop for a moment—and perhaps brings back a story or memory of your own—then sharing it has become every bit as rewarding as painting it.
