Memorial Day Parade - Main Street, Northfield CT
This painting was inspired by a photo taken near the family farm in the Northwest hills of CT. The image shows a time when holidays were honored with proper dress, and proper form, even at a young age. The scene is located in an open hay field alongside Main Street in Northfield, CT. The young girls are standing in formation with uniforms and with flags held to the side in similar fashion. My favorite part of this old image, is the face peeking out from behind the haystack. What is the story of this young girl? Was she pouting because she wanted to hold the large flag? Or is it a mother of one of the girls trying to stay out of the picture? We'll never know, but it makes for interesting conversation. The last girl to the far left is my grandmothers sister, Helen Swanson Borgeson, and the small girl in the middle of the image is identified as Alice Elizabeth Holm. We've not been able to identify the remaining girls.
This collection will be based on images from the early 1900's depicting the rural life in the CT Northwest Hills.
