First Congregational Church of Litchfield

Rising gracefully above the Green, the First Congregational Church of Litchfield is one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks. The congregation dates to 1721, while the present meetinghouse was built in 1829. Its white façade, classical columns, dark shutters and soaring steeple have become an enduring symbol of Litchfield’s New England character. Remarkably, the building was moved from this site in 1873 and returned and restored in 1929–30, adding another chapter to the long history preserved within this familiar view.
